Installing Ubuntu on Gateway DX4870

System BIOS version P11-A3, build date 10/18/2012

Trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, but after install and reboot get the message:

Reboot and Select proper Boot device

or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key

The HDD is in UEFI mode and the DVD which booted the install media was in UEFI mode as well. Cycled through all the combinations of the Secure Boot options in the BIOS, but all configurations yield the same error on reboot.

Is it possible to install Ubuntu on this desktop?

    Ubuntu 64 or 32 bit?

i suggest you 64 bit under UEFI, by the way have a look here:

    Thanks for your reply.

I am using 64bit Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and I had gone through all the options mentioned in the Ubuntu documentation regarding this error, but had not attempted using boot-repair.

Now have gone through several cycles of boot-repair but still have the same problem. Boot-repair indicates that it has solved all the problems, but my system is not booting.

For those skilled in boot-info diagnostics:

    http://paste.ubuntu.com/15419666/ <- boot-info report without having run boot-repair
    http://paste.ubuntu.com/15420024/ <- boot-info report after having run boot-repair
    http://paste.ubuntu.com/15420365/ <- boot-info report after rebooting and rerunning boot-repair

rebooting the broken system of course implied starting up in "Try Ubuntu" mode.

Anybody seen this issue on Gateway or Acer gear?

there was an issue on F5 laptops installing Linux distros and they fixed with a BIOS update but was an installation abort issue.

i saw 2 other threads on Ubuntu forums about your PC but they were too old, i suggest you to post also on Ubuntu forum about your issue.

It appears that something is rewriting the boot record after reboot.

I have been trying to find a BIOS update for this box but have not been successful. What is the process to deal with Acer in finding a BIOS update for a particular SKU?
