In order to get a faster boot time years ago I disabled the step where the machine looks for the OS on the DVD drive. Now I want to be able to boot from a rescue CD created with Macrium or Windows image backup, but the Delete or F12 keys do not bring me to the BIOS screen. How do I restore the default behavior?

Since your is a desktop, Del is the correct key, try to spam it during boot.

if this doesn't work, i suggest you to unplug your HDD, boot to BIOS pressing Del, check if F12 key is enabled or set CD/DVD as first bootable device, save and exit BIOS, reconnect the HDD and try again.
