I have a new Acer Aspire ES1. I want to upgrade to an SSD. It currently has a mechanical hard drive. Is this possible? and if so how do i do this without a windows key as I cannot see a windows key anyway on the laptop.

Thanks

Angus

if your OS is windows 8.x, you don't need a key, it's embedded on the BIOS.

i suggest you to create the Acer erecovery media before doing the swap, if you want to reinstall the OS from scratch; you can do it from the HDD, using the Acer erecovery software that's installed on your laptop.

hi. thanks for the response. im not entirely clear on what you mean when you say you can reinstall the os from scratch from the hard drive using the acer recovery media. i know that using the acer recovery media you can create an image onto another external usb drive which you can then use to image a new drive sitting in the laptop. but this by definition is NOT installing it from scratch. also, as a separate issue as far as i am aware its not a good idea to use an image from a mechanical drive on an ssd. it will work but will run very slow.

can you clarify what you mean?

    thanks
