Hello everyone,

So this morning I accidentally dropped my phone on my laptop and now it refuses to boot. I'm using Windows 10 and have an Acer Aspire E5-473. I went to the automatic repair menu, troubleshoot, and tried doing a system restore and a start up fix, but none of these work. Later I tried going into the BIOS menu and set UEFI to Legacy, which didn't work either. On my screen there's an icon with a magnifying glass which says "No bootable disk - please insert a disk and press any key". I really don't know what to do anymore. I don't know if this is useful, but my HDD is Wdc wd5000lpvx-22votto.

    HDD is listed on BIOS?

if not, probably it got disconnected, so the only way to check it, is to open the bottom of your laptop and have a look.

Yes, it got listed on BIOS, but it wasn't shown right away. First it said there was no HDD, and then a while later it was shown. I haven't tried looking at the HDD itself yet because I don't have the right screwdriver to open the bottom.I will try to look for one soon.

yeah, i think it's better if you have a look, if your laptop is not under warranty.

I managed to get a screwdriver and checked my HDD, but everything seemed like it should be. No cables loose or anything. A strange thing I noticed is that when I go to BIOS, the HDD keeps showing but then disappears after a while, and then later it shows again. The laptop still says "no bootable device".

a random disappearing HDD is not a good thing, can be a SATA port issue or HDD itself; if you are under warranty, give Acer support service a call, if not, a computer shop is the best choice, since there are a few things to check.

Hate to agree but that is not a simple software issue. If you ever thought of upgrading the hard drive now would be the time to try it. Worst case return it if issue still shows and send in for repair. The shock impact sounds like either the drive took damage or the sata interface did.

As for drive itself, I do not know which version of the e5-473 you have to recommend a upgrade path.

Dropping a phone onto a laptop shouldn't damage your mechanical HDD, as you have a HGST HTS54505087E660 mechanical HDD (which is pretty old), It could either be your HDD has faults, errors internally or its damaged or the OP's MBR (master boot record) is damaged? To fix the MBR do the following:

You need the original Windows 10 installation USB or DVD to repair the Master boot record.

If you don’t have the Windows 10 installation USB or DVD to run Command Prompt, go to Fix MBR with Easy Recovery Essentials.

    The instructions are:

    1. Boot from the original installation DVD (or the recovery USB)

    2. At the Welcome screen, bottom left corner, click "Repair your computer"

    3. Choose Troubleshoot

    4. Choose Command Prompt

    5. When the Command Prompt loads, type the following commands: bootrec /FixMbr bootrec /FixBoot bootrec /ScanOs bootrec /RebuildBcd

Try this fix and let us know if this fixes your "no bootable disk" as it should if it doesn't then it could be that your HGST HTS54505087E660 mechanical drive (which is pretty old) and has problems and errors. If you have valuable data on it then don't try to fix it, or open the HDD as its instructed by many guides on the internet, because, if you open the HDD it will reduce the chance of a specialist recovering any data on it. Take it to a "Specialist Data Recovery Technician"  and get all your data transferred to a new preferably 2.5 inch SSD drive. Good luck and hope this helps as I've had this same problem and I took it to a "Specialist Data Recovery Technician" and they recovered 99% of the data on the mechanical HDD.
