E5-551 touchpad not working after sleep

Firstly I want to apologise if I'm going about this all wrong, I'm new in these parts.

I recently got myself a shiny new Aspire E5-551 (my first laptop, imagine that!) Anyway, I have it upgraded to Windows 10 which I am absolutely falling in love with. However, I have a problem where the touchpad doesn't work properly after waking from sleep sometimes. Response is sluggish and multitouch gestures no longer work. A restart usually fixes it. I have read that Windows 8 had a similar issue until Microsoft issued a hotfix. However, Windows 10 needs the same fix.

I really don't want to roll back to 8.1 as I prefer Windows 10 and I'd be worried about the free upgrade expiring. Is there a fix on Win 10 that I'm just not aware of yet? Any assistance would be very much appreciated. Again, I apologise if I shouldn't have started a new thread regarding this.

    j800r,

I would like to suggest that you remove the installed drivers and have the operating system reinstall them to see if that resolves the issue.

Hi there, thanks for your response.

I had previously taken the troubleshooting action mentioned in your post along with various other troubleshooting techniques (I'm a fairly advanced/power user and by no means unfamiliar with tech or operating systems etc) and none of these seemed to work. Signing out and back in seems to resolve the problem which is better than a complete restart at least but still an annoyance. I have only experienced the issue with Windows 10.

In fact, I had a few headaches with Windows 10 which I can only put down to teething problems with the OS still being fresh and new. I've just today had to perform a factory reset due to bricking my Windows 10 install (don't worry about this as it most likely occured while I was testing out various tweaking/cleaning software) so I'm back on 8.1 at this moment in time. I've half a mind to hold off a little before reinstalling Windows 10 to see if a hotfix is issued and any other teething problems are ironed out but my only concern there is the free upgrade period expiring and suddenly having to pay for upgrading. I prefer Windows 10 otherwise. I feel it's the greatest Windows release to date and right up my alley but I veering way too far from the topic here...

The most prominant headache is that touchpad bug but I can appreciate if it's on microsoft's end the most I could do is hang tight and wait for a fix or possibly contact them for support. Since discovering that signing out also resolves it I can live with it far more easily. I couldn't be more happy with my new laptop otherwise. It's a great little machine and kudos to Acer for building the little trooper.

Thanks again. I'll leave it at that as I never intended on writing an unnecessary essay. Smiley Tongue

Apparently I'm not able to edit my posts so i have to add this update here. After much troubleshooting I have determined that the issue stems from the touchpad occasionally being detected as a mouse. I have exhausted every possible troubleshooting technique. No idea whether the fault lies with Microsoft or other parties. There is literally nothing left i can do on my end.

    j800r,

Would you elaborate a bit more on your "I have determined that the issue stems from the touchpad occasionally being detected as a mouse" statement. Is it moving erratically, or just randomly sometimes showing as something other than what it should be?

Have you checked for a possible BIOS update to see if that fixes it? Make sure you create a back-up of your current BIOS before upgrading in case something happens.

I attempted to explain as much as I could in my initial post. I apologise if it still wasn't clear enough.

The trackpad is responsive but sluggish and not recognising gestures. Basically the system seems to temporarily confuse it for a mouse or something. Disabling then re-enabling Microsoft's HID-compliant touchpad driver seems to clear it right up (along with workarounds previously mentioned) which leads me to believe it's a Windows bug.

My UEFI BIOS is already on the latest available version. There hasn't been a revision that addresses this issue anyway it would seem. It seems extremely random and there are no particular steps to reproduce it. It just randomly decides when it doesn't want to work after sleeping.

    j800r,

That is strange, it could have been a system file issue when you upgraded that may have been messed up. It sounds software for sure since disabling it and enabling again allowed it to work without issues.
