I get the default boot device devive missing or failed. After reading all the posts, it appears an issue with the bios. I ca not access the bios using f2 or f10. The message appears immediately. After hitting ok, boot manager appears. A usb recovery drive i inserted is available, but when selected like my hard drive, it fails and returns the default boot device missing or failed message. I am totally lost with what to try next. Thank you.

    adgmjj,

A defective hard drive does not affect the BIOS, that's entirely a different problem. It sounds to me like the hard drive itself might be bad, were you having crashing problems before this problem occurred? Have you tried tapping F12 to see if that will allow you to access the recovery drive?

Tapping F12 does not do anything, except bring up the same error.  I know its not the hard drive. I actually purchased an new E5 571 and swapped the drives. The HDD works find in the new system.  If it was only the drive, then the USB recovery drive would boot.   Something else must be wrong in CMOS since the ACER spash never shows.  I opened the system and the CMOS Battery is 3.1 volts. Its like it forgot how to read a boot sector. Is there anyway to manually reset the CMOS via the motherboard?
