Hi all.
Acer Aspire es1 512 about 8 months old...sadly was running that bloody Win 8.1 with Bing oem

Started booting slower and slower for no apparent reason...(10+ mins to boot up)

Tried the win 8.1 restore, repairimage, reset palarvour and it just constantly stuck on automatic repair doing nothing.

Tried to upgrade to win 10 (the one where i would clean install the drive)...got so far and then black screened.

Now when it boots i get the screen where it says as the picture below

If i leave it i get an acer screen and after a while "preparing automatic repair"
that never happens.

Managed to get that iso of the win8.1 with bing file and copy it to a bootable usb/cd
and can get into the bios but when i changed the settings to boot from either usb fdd or disc drive
it just wont boot.

    OK

Just a quick update so i didnt leave this hanging.

    Scan found 100,000's of errors.

Upon next boot the laptop told me there was no bootable operating system.

Reckoned the hard drive was dead as a dodo so sent it back to Acer via UPS.

They said the hard drive was indeed faulty and replaced the hard drive and sent it back to me

within 5 days under the 1 year guarantee.

Upon switching the laptop on and reinstalling stuff i was immediately greeted with a "this laptop

can be upgraded to windows 10" sadly i dont think i will be trying that again :-)

Many thanks Acer for the super quick turnaround and Ultra thanks for Ace Ironfly for taking the time

to try and help me out.

    Hi.
I made the iso into a bootable usb with yumi and tried with imgburn too.
Ran a check on the file too after I downloaded it.

    Can you please try Rufus?

    http://rufus.akeo.ie/?locale=en_US

select partition scheme to UEFI only and burn your iso.

connect to your laptop, press F12 at boot and check if your USB flash drive is listed and choose it.

    Hi.
Tried Rufus first and I'm getting.

"this image is either non bootable,or it uses a boot or compression method that is not supported by Rufus"

So the .iso is not good, since you are not ablet to boot from the USB media even using other tools to create a bootable USB media.

Ok, let me read but delete that link, it's not allowed here. Smiley Happy

by the way, your file is an IMG not ISO, quite different.

    try to use:

    Win32 Disk Imager

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/

to burn IMG to USB media.

    Hi.

    thanks for the replies.

Yeah i know it comes as an .img file

Ive used a variety of tools to convert it to .iso file already.

Will try that one now thanks.

    (deleted link too)

win32 disk imager, doesn't convert it to iso but it burns straight to the USB media, way better.

    Righto.

copied the img file to a formatted usb using win32 disk imager.

The bios was set to boot from "usb fdd" first

F12 Boot manager is enabled but USB doesnt come up when i press f12 at start up.

Pc just booted into same error screen and then stuck on acer screen with "Preparing automatic repair" for half an hour.

    Smiley Sad

if you can enter BIOS pressing F2 at boot, try to disable secure boot and then try to boot from the USB flash drive.

    Hi ya,

    (thanks for all the responses)

Disabled secure boot and usb fdd is still set 1st in the boot sequence but i still just get the blue screen about needing to be repaired and missing the file.

If i leave it, it goes to a screen with 6 or so options.

safe mode with debugging, safe mode with networking etc etc... the safe mode ones dont work.

If i press escape at this screen it brings up 2 operating systems

windows 8.1 and windows 10 or windows diagnostics.

Trying any of those takes me back to the blue screen or shuts the pc down.

if you BIOS is UEFI, the USB flash drive, normally is listed with its manufacter name, it's better to check under F12 and not rely to boot sequence on BIOS.

    Morning.

Yeah the boot mode is UEFI and booting into Windows Bootmanager (F12 startup) brings up

Windows Boot manager and then only shows the ID for my Hard Drive with no other option!

normally this means that USB is not accessible (wrong format??? FAT32 or NTFS) or the bootable .img is not EFI compatible or your flash drive is not good (happened to me, 2 different USB flash drives, same iso but one wasn't able to be recognised by BIOS)

by the way reading your first post, i can suspect some kind of HDD failure but honestly i would be able to boot from USB.

Do you mind to try a live USB Ubuntu?

not need to install it, just to see if you are able to boot from that USB flash drive with a trusted .iso.

    HI.

I have tried a full Edubuntu install from a disc but it hung just as it was installing the different packs.

I Also tried a live Edbunutu install off disc and it got so far before freezing.

I will try out live edubuntu/unbuntu on a bootable usb and see what happens that way.

    Hi ya.

    Furthermore from this.

I actually didnt try ubuntu  (my work network blocked me d/l it for some reason)

But i did redo the "windows 10 media creator" from the windows website.

I created this to a bootable usb and the pc boots up to set up windows 10 albeit with no mouse/touchpad

so i have to use the tab key etc..

Anyway, windows 10 got stuck installing again but i can get into the recovery part which gives me some options.

Recovery didnt work again - got stuck as before and came up with message.

But i can get into command prompt if this can help me in anyway?

on command prompt try the classic command:

sfc /scannow (for errors on windows installation)

    chkdsk c:  (for HDD errors)

ok, you must try an HDD check tool outside windows enviroment.

I hope you will be able to boot from an USB flash drive setting LEgacy instead of UEFI so i can suggest you to create a bootable USB or CD media from Hiren's boot cd .iso

    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
unzip the zip file, burn the .iso file to CD or USB pen/external HDD
then use a software to burn CD/DVD or USB flash drive and burn the .iso file
once done, put the CD/DVD/USB on your PC, boot from CD/USB (maybe you need to boot under Legacy if you have UEFI BIOS)
press F12 at boot and choose CD or USB to boot.

once booted, check under HDD tools some software to check your SMART attributes and also have an HDD check.

by the way, if you know your HDD manufacter brand, you can always check on the manufacter website, about some bootable iso to run HDD check tools.
