I want to hook up my Aspire 5600U with my laptop via HDMI. I want to use my Aspire 5600U as a monitor. Can I do it? Because while I hook my pc with it, I can't switch into HDMI in the option. HELPP

There should be two HDMI ports on the back I/O panel.

The order will be 3x USB, 1x HDMI out, 1x Ethernet (RJ-45), 1x HDMI in, 1x SPDIF.

You will need to be using the HDMI in to display output from the notebook.

I have also tried this, I have plugged something into the HDMI in, and nothing happens and I cant find anywhere to 'activate' or to show the input on the screen.  is there software that shows it?

"something" isn't quite descriptive enough for me to assist with.

If it's a computer connected via HDMI, then you need to change the output on the computer.

I'm having the exact same issue.  When I check the monitor configuration on my laptop (ASUS Zenbook) it is recognizing the additional monitor.  However, nothing changes on the Acer 5600U.

I clicked the monitor menu button twice to get a set of options that seem to be the input/output (this is above the rocker switch button above the power button on the right hand side).  There are three options - an arrow pointing right, a PC with an arrow, and the HDMI IN option which is grayed out.

    1) Where is there a manual that explains what all these options are?

    2) How can I activate the HDMI IN option?

    3) Do I need to load Acer monitor drivers onto the laptop to get the laptop to send a signal the Acer can read?

    Thanks!

For the Aspire 5600U, the HDMI IN can be selected by using the button on the right side of the system to bring up the On Screen Display menu and then pressing up and down on the toggle button.

With the HDMI IN cable connected, is the other device sending information to the display?

For most notebooks, you're going to need to toggle the display to the external device.

Hi, can you be more specific with 'using the button on the right side of the system to bring up the On Screen Display menu'  i cant seem to find it.

    thanks

Tommy, I'm having the exact same issue.  I've tried two different laptops (Win 7 and Win 8) using two different HDMI cables and the Acer does not recognize the HDMI input from either.  I use the side button, go into the input menu, and the HDMI IN option is grayed out in both cases and the toggle button doesn't do anything.

Could there be something wrong with the port on the machine?  Is there any way to troubleshoot this?  I've successfully connected both laptops to other devices using the HDMI port, so I think there's something going on with this All-in-one.

    Thanks for your help.

coleburg, were you able to get this to work?  It's driving me crazy.  I actually talked to Acer technicians twice and they had no idea how to resolve this.  I'm wondering it there is some setting in the Acer that needs to be flipped to get it to accept HDMI input, or if something on the system is blocking it.

or maybe my port just doesn't work.

I have had the same problem, i connect up a FreeSat box to the HDMI in and the screen flicks on to HDMI for a few seconds and displays a blank screen and 'no signal' message then goes back to the PC screen.

The OSD option to choose HDMI-in is greyed out.

I have not had a chance to update things using the internet as the house has not been connected yet.

There does not appear to be a solution posted to this yet and i am hoping that someone from Acer has an answer.

Given just plugging in the HDMI cable with nothing attached causes the same switching to a blank screen.

Please Acer, I have the same problem. I purchased this for the kids to play the PS3 through, as well as using it for work. The Option is Greyed Out!!!!

    Please Help out here.

    Hi,

I had the same issue with the HDMI not switching to the PS3. Buttons on the side to switch input are useless. This is how I do it. PC on, HDMI input PS3 connected.  Simply switch on ps3.. Then on your remote controller simply hit the power off/on button (which puts your PC to sleep), the screen will then switch to the HDMI input (PS3). When you want to switch back, hit the power on button, PC wakes up and screen moves back to PC.

Does anyone know how to reduce the sound when playing thru HDMI?

    Thanks

No, never got this working, i pretty much gave up, I will never buy acer again, their support is shocking to say the least.   I have had nothing buy problems with the 5600u and acer will not reply to resovle the problems.

I have accepted this is a pile of rubbish and hope one day it dies and I can replace with a functioning device.

this thread for example has been on going for a very long time and we are still stuck with greyed out HDMI, have acer resolved NO.

I had an audio problem here http://community.acer.com/t5/Desktops-All-In-Ones/5600u-audio-problems/td-p/38077

this is from MARCH!!!!!  no response from Acer.

Terrible products matched only by their god awful support.

Hey, I just wanted to follow up and let you know I finally got this to work.  I sent the machine to Acer and had it sent back telling me HDMI was working fine.  After a bunch of trial and error I realized that my HDMI cable was not working.  I actually bought 3 cheap-O cables from ebay and amazon and none of them worked.  After some tech issues with my projector over the holiday I tried hooking up the Xbox to my 5600U and it worked.  I then used the same cable, which had come with the Xbox, and was able to connect my laptop.

I went to Target and invested in a $20 Vizio HDMI cable with gold ends and I can now see my laptop displayed on the Acer unit.  So my only advice is to go buy a nice HDMI cable and see if it fixes your problem.

Good luck - I completely understand how you are feeling!
