Aspire X1800 won't boot, possible bios corruption

Hello acer community,

I have recently started using a old acer aspire X1800 mini desktop while my other laptop is in repairs and it was working all good, untill when it blue screened me.

Since it blued screened me, I cannot get it to boot. Whenever I turn it on, a fan gets very loud and does not make the ussual 'beep' and gives no signal to my monitor.

This lead me to think is might be a BIOS issue, however strangly it will automaticly turn itself on if power is given to it (for example, if you turn the powerpoint on, it will automaticly turn on).

Is this a BIOS issue or something else and how do I fix it? I have searched on the internet but only get how to flash a Acer Aspire One, not a X1800.

Thank you for your help in advance, Lachee.

Re: Aspire X1800 won't boot, possible bios corruption

Hi Lachee

It sounds as if the motherboard has failed. If it was the BIOS, it would still power up, and probably beep. The screen would light up, but there would be nothing on it (perhaps a cursor).

There is a slim chance it could be the actual power supply itself. Swapping it out with another will tell.

You could try to clear the CMOS, by removing the battery from the motherboard. Leave it removed for a while before replacing. Another idea is to use the CMOS jumper. This is a set of 3 pins with a plastic connecter on 2 of the pins, most often pins 1 & 2. Place the jumper on pins 2 & 3. Push your power supply button once and wait a short while. Replace the jumper on pins 1 & 2. Once done, try to power up your PC, to see if it makes any difference. If it boots, you will need to enter BIOS to set date & time.

If, (as I imagine) there is no change, then it will be the motherboard. That's bad luck to have 2 PC fail in a short space of time!

Re: Aspire X1800 won't boot, possible bios corruption

It worked, it worked! Taking the battery out has seemed to work. It didn't start once I supplied it with power, and when I turned it on it went to normal! It asked if I wish to reset the defult values, which I did and it then continued to boot windows perfectly fine.

Thank you so much, I thought this computer was as good as dead.
