After installing Windows 7 64 bit from Vista 32 bit my display has lines going through it

I ran the Windows 7 advisor before I switched to Windows 7 64 bit and there were two compatibility problems. 1) The network adapter, and 2) the display adapter.

I had to install a new Network Card after many attempts to update the driver failed. I am now up and running with a new adapter.

Now I would like to know if I am going to have to do something more than update the driver for the display adapter. I have an ATI Radeon x1200 series, driver 8.593.100.0. That is what I updated to, and it says it is working properly.

The display only gets the lines running through it when I download something other wise it is fine. I'll attach a picture so you can see.

I probably should have added that I have an M5100 Acer Aspire if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Re: After installing Windows 7 64 bit from Vista 32 bit my display has lines going through it

You could try this one which is, I think, slightly earlier than your current driver:

http://www2.ati.com/drivers/10-2_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc.exe

It is clearly a Vista driver but it is the one that AMD point to for the X1200 and Windows 7 64bit.

From what I have managed to find on the net, the X1200 is not supported by either Microsoft or AMD for Windows 7 64bit. All report I've seen suggest it does work with Win7 32bit. Some state that they have managed to get it working by using Vista drivers. It may also be worthwhile trying Acer's Vista 64bit driver:

http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/VGA/VGA_ATI_8.360.0.0000_Vistax64.zip?acerid=63364573... M5100&OS=V09&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=EMEA_27

I must admit that I do find it a little odd that you only have problems while downloading. It initially made me think it could be an IRQ problem with the new net card but you should be PnP so it's unlikely that. You would also see problems in device manager.

Your X1200 is integrated isn't it? You may be forced down the same path as the net card if a solution cannot be found.

Re: After installing Windows 7 64 bit from Vista 32 bit my display has lines going through it

Ok, I was able to install driver from your second link. It says it's a x1250, and that it is working properly. I am unable to determine at the moment because I did a Windows update and now I am getting the following message: Catalyst control center: host application has stopped working.

I am now running a scan to see if I have a virus as suggested by googling this problem. If it comes back clean, which it should since my harddrive was wiped clean and I've only installed Chrome, Adobe, and Foxit Reader. Then hopefully I can determine if the new driver worked. :smileyindifferent:

Yes, the x1200 is integrated. I had to roll back the driver to get rid of the error message: Catalyst Control Centre: Host application has stopped working.

I am going to try the Acer driver and see if that works.
