Chromebook C720 will not start

Acer C720 shut down when the battery ran out of power. I plugged the chromebook in with the cord and and it would not start up. I assumed the battery would recharge. and it still will not start up. I have read other solutions like holding down the refresh key with the power key, and it doesnt work. Also, some say they still can see lights, but I can't, seems it is completely dead. I have not opened the back to replace the battery, that sounds a little daunting and I would do that as a last resort.
