for my mom's Acer Chromebook C710? She was asking because she knows I have to have one on my Toshibia Windows 7.

The Chrome OS comes with some built in antivirus which is automatically updated by the Google team. You can read more about it here. https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/17787
In my opinion the short answer is, no, you don't need anti virus with the information above. Also, Chrome OS is significantly different that a Windows or Android OS. This makes it much harder for a virus to infect your system.
