Well, I tried all IT guy's suggestions, and immediately things improved. It must have run for a couple of weeks with no problem. So thanks for that! It was a little honeymoon, at least.
But then it began to balk again. At first, if I took the bottom off and poked gently at everything, then re-assembled, it would then start and run normally for a few days. Then it got so I'd have to give it a cautious little 'whump' on the table or it wouldn't start. Disassembly or resetting with the battery out didn't always do it.
And finally, just recently, it started shutting off - that is, going into a total freeze - during use. I'd have to force it off, remove the battery, and fiddle and whump and pray and sometimes it would start again and sometimes it wouldn't. I'm typing on it right now, and this is the first time I've got it to run in days.
Unfortunately, this seems to be one cheaply built little laptop. I won't be buying another one, nor will I be recommending anything Acer to my friends who ask for tips and recommendations.
Don't tell me that I beat it to death - I only started with the bumps when nothing else would start it. I've never done that with a computer before, and I should naver have had to do it to this one.
I have no argument with ChromeOS - in fact, I like it. I'll be replacing this with another Chromebook, but it won't be an Acer. Maybe the new Dell - it looks pretty solid.
Too bad - this little box gave me one good year, but now I feel I wasted my money. If you're reading this and thinking of buying one, I have this advice: Don't waste yours!

Just wanted to let the Forum know that Acer Blane was as good as his word and my ailing C710 is in Acer's hands now. We'll see what transpires, but I am grateful for their attention to the matter and hope that I'll end up with a working machine.
So I feel a little foolish for the rant above - hope it turns out to have been unjustified. Just got mad, I guess.
Will follow up with results of Acer's action, and thanks again Acer Blane.
Hoping!

At least you got some action. Mine did the same thing and I sure haven't gotten a bit of satisfaction from Acer. Here's the thread:

Maybe a rant is the only way to get some attention. I wouldn't feel foolish if I were you.

I've tried that multiple times and just tried it again. Nothing happens, no power light, nothing. It seems the C710-2847 model commonly has this defect. Actually did get it to start once more a couple weeks ago (out of hundreds of tries). It ran fine for about 2 hours then quit again. No power light, nothing.

It seems unrelated, but all I can say is that after my son lost the OEM power adapter, I purchased a new one from Amazon: http://amzn.com/B00DUMFZ6O (non-oem). This problem of not powering on was quite frequent. Ever since the new power adapter, it has yet to return.
It's entirely possible it's a coincidence, but figured I'd share nonetheless.

Thanks for the reply. Sad to say I've now tried multiple power adapters and even a fully charged battery from a friends C710-2847. Nothing happens, not even a power light. His works fine with my battery and power adapter though. I'm thnking it must be a MB problem, but exactly where I don't know...

A couple of weeks ago I sent my C710 Chromebook back to Acer due to the problems detailed further up this message thread. I got it back a few days ago, and so far all is well. According to the repair sheet accompanying the returned laptop, they replaced the mainboard, identified as "MAINBOARD SANDY C710 INTEL CLN-847 MN70 LVDS 2.0 W".
This has apparently corrected the problem entirely. None of the previously described behaviors have returned, and it seems literally to be a new laptop. So I'd say my problem has been resolved satisfactorily. If it keeps running properly, I'll reinstate it as my travel laptop; it's been ideal for that duty, and I missed it when its former unreliability forced me to leave it home.
I'm impressed with Acer's attention to this, as I thought I'd have to write this machine off as a dead loss. Thank you, Acer-Blane and the Acer U.S. repair team! I appreciate it very much.

Sorry! The helpful tech was Acer-Blayn - I had mispelled it "Blane". Either way you spell it, he is a real ace!
Thanks again for addressing my problem, Acer-Blayn. The Chromebook is still running well, and I appreciate it.
