Windows 10 upgrade icon

I have never received the icon to update Win 8.1 to Win10.  I have updates turned on.  How do I get it?  I have gone to Microsoft site, they require the Windows registration number.  I cannot find it anywhere on the outside of the machine - it came loaded with 10.  There is a small Windows 10 sticker near the Acer SN sticker.  This machine is an Acer Aspire AT3-600-UR33, which was a freeby in the class action thing back in 2013.  I'm thinking maybe it won't qualify?

It came loaded with windows 8.1 or windows 10?

Have you made a USB factory default recovery drive yet?

It came loaded with Windows 8.1.  No, I have not made a recovery disk.  I didn't get any documentation with it.  It just came in a box.  It was free after the class action against Gateway regarding floppy drives, or some such thing.

Ok.  Try to make a USB factory default recovery drive using either of the two methods below....

Maybe someone else will know why you haven't received update icon.  Usually it takes a week from the time you first turn on your computer for the first time....to get all the windows updates.....and get the icon.  Sometimes you have to restart your computer and go to windows update manually to expedite.

    You can also search forum......

Since it's not on acer driver supported list, you may have to wait until microsoft comes up with drivers for your computer.  That could be anywhere from a few days to never.

If you have your files backed up and recovery drive made, you can try to use the tool and choose "upgrade this PC now".  But there's no guarantees it will work properly.  You may have to hunt for drivers. And you may not find them.

Don't choose "upgrade a different PC".

I'll create the recovery disk, backups already done.  I'll then try the links and see what happens.  I'm concerned that since this machine seems to be unsupported, possibly because of its provenance, I may not be allowed to do the free upgrade.  I'll report back.  Thanks for the assistance.

Ok...sounds good.  For windows 8.1, you have to use a USB flash thumb drive for the factory default recovery drive.  The program will tell you if you need 16GB flash drive or 32GB flash drive.

I've been finding sandisk cruzer USB flash drives on sale at best buy between $5-$9.

Edit: It's safer to grab a 32GB USB flash drive as sometimes 16 GB isn't enough.

I was going to use a DVD, but if the flash drive is better, that's what I'll do.

Yes, microsoft requires a USB flash drive for factory default recovery drive in windows 8.1.

The video walks you through it.

OK, I got the 16GB flash drive and backed up (took a long time) the old OS (Win 8.1), then followed the instructions on the Microsoft web site for upgrading to Win 10.  Initially, when I tried to download Win 10 I got an error code: 0x800709DD 0x90016.  After checking for a solution on-line I tried again, this time under the Admin login and download proceeded, although at a leisurly pace - it took about 4 hours.  I then did the upgrade which took a couple hours with several automatic restarts.  Thankfully, I was never asked for the product code as there is none, outside or inside the box, just the little color changing sticker.  I chose to keep all my old settings and programs, uh, aps, and that worked just fine.  Mind you, I'm not a guru or hacker, just a hack, so if I can do it most literate folks should be able to also.  So the bottom line is that I am typing this on Win 10.  Already I like that the "Tile World" thing is GONE, I'm using a desktop with a mouse, but the learning curve is pretty steep right now.  I guess this means I have to go out and buy another book that I'll likely seldom read, but life is good.
