Aspire M3970 stopped booting half way. All attempts to repair failed, tried reinstall, keep getting the message,

Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer.

It could not boot into the safe mode either, with the last file:

windows/system 32/ drivers/disk.sys.

Can anyone help?

    nez,

I would perform a disc and memory check, either of them could be the issue.

HI, Your solution requires logging into windows. As mentioned, Logging in stops halfway, cannot even log on in safe mode. I read in other forums, even the recovery disk or usb cannot run in this condition. Can you help?

    nez,

Try to get to the Advanced Options screen and work from there.

Thanks, but I am not able to get into the second screen below  after trying to reinstall the OS. I keep gettting this screen after pressing Del on booting up. If I do not press del, it loops to the screen below.

    nez,

If it just keeps looping with no way out, the next step could be to use a disc utility to remove all partitions and use the recovery media you created and/or received from Acer to reload it. If you do not have the media, you might need to purchase some from Acer.

    nez,

That could be the hard drive. Do you have the ability to run a disc check using the Ubuntu software, that may find and fix problems on the drive and get you back to where you need to be?

Thanks. Not able to boot from Ubuntu either. If USB is unsuccessfulk, disc would probably not work either. Is it possible to remove the HD and reapir it using another PC? If so , how should it be done?

    Hi,

Could it also be a problem with the motherboard? How could we tell?

    Thanks,

    .

About Ubuntu not booting, is your laptop using UEFI or Legacy BIOS?

if on UEFI, try to disable secure boot and try again to boot from Ubuntu.

    Good.

i suggest you to create a bootable USB or CD media from Hiren's boot cd .iso
    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
unzip the zip file, burn the .iso file to CD or USB pen/external HDD
then use a software to burn CD/DVD or USB flash drive and burn the .iso file
once done, put the CD/DVD/USB on your PC, boot from CD/USB (maybe you need to boot under Legacy if you have UEFI BIOS)
press F12 at boot and choose CD or USB

Hiren's boot CD has some usefull tools to test HDD and even a mini version of XP OS if you need to try to browse the HDD.

if you remember the HDD manufacter brand, probably they have a bootable DOS enviroment to test the HDD.

to test ram, i suggest you memtest86+, there's a bootable version too, that doesn't need any OS installed.

    Thanks.

I will try that later, as my main concern now is saving the data in the HD. Really do not want to accidentaly erase it while trying to fix the system.
