HARD DRIVE - excessive activity

Running WINDOWS 10 with 2 Aug. Anniversary update. ASPIRE TC-605 BIOS P11-A2

My problem is that my hard drive runs excessively, not all the time but a random times. Watching the Task Manager (Performance) for DISK, Active Time goes to 100%, Average Response Time, Read Speed and White Speed all go to zero. The time lapse can be over 4 minutes but is generally shorter at one or two minutes. During this period you can not do anything. At times, Active Time goes to 100% for shorter extend period of time but other parameters are still indicating readings greater than zero and the system continues to function. I have been unable to identify which process is or may be causing the problem.
