Aspire XC-605 Win10 upgrade

Hi,

I'm running Win10 at work and love it unlike 8.1 which I really hate.

My Aspire XC-605 is getting pretty sluggish on Win 8.1 (to the point the OS sometimes hangs for a minute for no reason).

It keeps saying in the 10 upgrade assistant it's not ready for Win10.

Are there drivers available and how can I force it to upgrade?

Also my Aspire XC-605 is running a weedy i3 and 6GB ram, 1TB drive on 8.1 x64. Is it possible to upgrade to i7 and 16GB ram?

Any feedback would be helpful as I'd love to get shot of 8.1.

I'd say your computer is messed up or you have a virus....  because you should be getting windows 10....so something is definitely wrong with your computer

    1. Try running anti-malware software

    2. Make a USB factory default recovery drive

    http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/26287/~/create-a-acer-factory-default-backup-in-windows-8.1

    3. backup you files and reset your PC to factory defaults.

    http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29934/~/use-acer-recovery-management-to-restore-your-system-or-create-recovery-media

    4. It may ask you to update to windows 10 immediately after your do the factory reset...or you might have to get all your windows updates first.  And that can take a while.

Acer has your windows 10 drivers here:

    http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers

I have no idea if you need to update your BIOS since I don't have your computer model.

If you list your current BIOS version, I'll tell you which BIOS version to flash and how to flash it.  And why you need to flash it. (as a bonus) Smiley Wink

To find you current bios version...

    right click on windows start

    left click on run

    type msinfo32

    click ok

    Hi Jordan,

Thanks for getting back so quickly with great responses Smiley Happy

I have a Cisco VPN adapter it's grumbling about I use for work, I have removed it but it's still coming up in the upgrade check oddly. I think it's virus free, been scanned and malware scanned and seems clean. It's running avast pro (I kow it isn't the best) and really don't have much on it apart from VS2013, Office 2010 Pro and Xamarin (I develop mobile apps and other stuff).

After removing the VPN driver and updating it tries to update and then throws an update error but the other windows updates ran fine so the update client seems ok.

This seems to be downloading it.

    tazzer,

The only thing that I would know to try is disabling avast...in case it's somehow blocking it, but that may be a long shot.  Other than a complete reset.  Sorry.

The latest BIOS for xc-605 is P11.B4

It's not a big deal to flash....just read the README file and follow instructions.

The reason I suggest updating the BIOS is because I think the latest uses secure flash.  I can't say with certainty that the previous versions don't but if you remember a few months ago with all that "Hacking Team" leak, ami BIOS/UEFI was the one they targeted and had the UEFI hack..  So I'm *assuming* Acer/ami updated the BIOS to fix that.....but don't know for sure.  I did notice it (the latest) uses secure flash.

Yes you can "choose upgrade this PC".  I forgot all about that.  Don't choose "install on a different PC" because that has caused a lot of problems with activation for many people.

    Jordan,

Thanks for your help, it's really appreciated.

When can I get the BIOS update?

    tazzer,

You can get the BIOS with your windows 8.1 or windows 10.  It doesn't matter.  To be honest, it would make me a little nervous flashing if my computer wasn't completely stabile.  So maybe wait and make sure it's not hanging anymore....and everything is ok.

    BIOS is here:

After you upgrade the first time and verify that it activated, then you can go back and do a clean intall if you want.

    To flash bios

    1. download bios package

    2. extract

    3. read the README Smiley Wink

    4. copy win and rom folders to a USB thumb drive

    5.  open an admin command prompt

if your USB thumb drive has a drive letter of F, then it would be

    F:

    cd win

    flash

After it flashes, then reboot your computer.  Hit delete key when prompted and load bios defaults (F9) and then save/exit (F10)....thats it.

That's good news that the upgrade worked.

Here is the article I was talking about, but it said they targeted Insyde BIOS, and it would also work on AMI.  We both have AMI.

Edit: When you flash the BIOS, you'll notice it will echo "Secure Flash" on the screen when it starts its flashing routine.

    I spoke to soon.

It no longer boots Smiley Surprised

I'll flash the BIOS later and see if that helps.

You are braver than I am. Smiley Wink

    I would backup my files.

Check to make sure my windows 10 is activated.

Make both a factory default USB backup and a backup of drivers and apps

    http://acer-ame.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/26286/~/create-a-acer-factory-default-backup-in-windows-8.1

    If windows 10 is activated:

Download the windows 10 iso and burn iso to dvd or follow microsofts instructions on how to make bootable usb media

    Boot the win10 media

Instead of installing, click on "Repair my Computer"

Navigate to command  prompt and use "diskpart clean" to wipe my HDD

Do a clean install of windows 10, if it asks for key, just click "skip", "not now" or "do this later"

And then flash bios after clean win10 is fully stabile

Admittedly I'm a little paranoid about flashing bios

And you always have the option of a clean install of windows 8.1

Hi Jordan, I went down that route and wiped the data on the partitions. I had malware a week ago which avast pro happily let on despite pre-scanning the file, I'm not 100% sure it was away so decided to just bite the bullet. Sticking Win10 on again as I have a stable machine.

    Ok, sounds good.

If any problems resurface, then you might have to do a "diskpart clean" to wipe everything including the EFI partition etc.

    Hi Jordan,

Fingers crossed. It seems fine and runs much faster than when upgarded before and seems stable. I haven't updated teh BIOS, thought I'd wait as you suggested.

Do you happen to know what i5 model of CPU the machine will handle?

I need a processor with 4 cores so I can run Oracle Virtual Box and Genymotion emulators. The later mobile handsets that run Android 5.0 have multiple core CPU's.

I also noticed no 'VT-X' option in the BIOS, just VT. I expect thats' because it's an i3 CPU. I don't know will it support VT-X if I upgrade to an i5.

If you do know of a good i5 to recommend and RAM that would be useful as I have to upgrade to 16GB for VM work.

    Thanks again,

    Norman.
