My daughter's ACER Aspire 5552 is continually getting hot and shutting down. The computer is 1.5 years old. Does the battery need replacing.

Please ensure that the product is always used on a hard flat surface so that the exhaust vents are not blocked.  With the age of the unit we would suggest cleaning the cooling fan(s) to help improve the efficiency of the cooling system.

Even with the laptop on a table it has overheated and shut down multiple times during studying. Do you have a procedure for cleaning the fan? I can start with that. If that doesn't solve the problem, what is the likly scenario?
