You really should check that the i3 370m is socketed and not soldered. When it's soldered an upgrade is not possible.

furthermore the 740QM is going to put out a lot more heat, so not sure if your system can handle it...the fan probably will be on all the time.

its not soldered. im wondering since the 370m has graphics and the 740qm doesnt if my motherboard revision has onboard graphics. according to intel the hm55 chipset has graphics. guess that doesnt mean my version does for sure.
