wifi only works in certain areas in my house

Hi,

I've had my acer aspire for a couple of yrs now and it worked fine but for the last 2-3 mths I'm having trouble connecting to my wireless. Signal strength is good. For example, I'm sitting on my couch typing this. If I move the laptop just a few inches in either direction, I lose my connection. I can no longer use it in my dining rm or kitchen, etc. Just certain areas. I've tried unplugging different electronic devices with no luck. My kids have a laptop, macbook, and Ipad and all work fine everywhere in the house. Any help or suggestions would be great.

Thanks, Dean

Re: wifi only works in certain areas in my house

I have a brand new Aspire R7 that does the same thing right out of the box. We also have other wifi devices in the house that work just fine. I have had several conversations with the Best Buy Geek Squad, the Acer tech support line and even my wireless provider. They made me do a sort of soft reboot, then a complete system restore. No difference. In the beginning Acer was telling me that there was a new driver. There isn't. I even replaced my router, nothing different. Reading the forums seems like Acer is having a lot of wifi problems on several of their models. I hope they can come up with a solution very soon that will take care of this.

Probably better to just read this megathread on wifi issues and post if there's anything to add:

Generally, use InSSIDer to see if it's a wifi crowding issue:

Load it up and walk around, watch the bars rise and fall. If you see other SSIDs rising past yours or near them, it's a crowding issue. Moving your wifi channel on your router over to a clearer space, for example in the 5Ghz range, will typically solve this.

Otherwise it's a range issue, and the poor wifi on the laptop is compounding the fact you're far-ish from the router. You're just screwed unless Acer can come up with a fix, which may not be possible.
