Hi, just bought this, brand new - when I switch on for first time, screen is just black.... heard disk is whirring away, just can't get any life out of the scree. Any suggestions gratefully received (before I have to package up and send back to Amazon!)

Life is too short to spend time trying to fix a new machine.  Send it back for a replacement.

Agreed, if you just bought the thing unless you bought it online don't even mess around with it. It can be fixed but it's easier to just get the store where you bought it from to deal with the issue.
