I am experiencing just the same, irritating problem. However, it could hardly be caused by lacking memory as I upgraded my D270 to 2GB which is maximum for this model.
What I also noted is that the problem intnesifies when Skype is on. The sound is terrible then - no matter if I'm listening to something on YouTube or from an MP3 file.
Graphic card drivers? I would probably never come up with this. I'll test it and come back here to let you know.

For your information 2GB is not the maximum, I believe 4GB is, but given the amount of disinformation on many sites it could be 64GB.. I have 4GB working just fine on my machine.
The reason I mention the graphics drivers is because there is a lot of unhappyness on the Intel forum about our GPU, for some reason the drivers are not made very well and so it is possible that the CPU is having to also do some of the processing for the graphics, this all leads to the whole computer slowing down and Skype not working.
But to be sure, I would get taskmanager open and see what is happening. I've also noticed that using VLC player the sound is terrible, but using Windows media player the sound is good. So who knows what is happening there...

Well, the driver I have on my computer is newer than the one available for download on the Acer support website...
P.S. I use iTunes.

I can remember that when I bought my Toshiba Satellite in 2007 I had quite the same problem. To be precise, the sound stopped for just a fraction of a second each time the fan went on. I turned out that (as long as I am able to explain it with my lame computer-language) that routines responsible for starting the fan were somehow faulty so they took too long and made the CPU - let's say - too busy. Updating BIOS was the solution. Yesterday I checked my BIOS but again... I've got the newest version, according to the Acer support site.

Yes I also have a much newer driver version 1091, but even this is almost no better than the original drivers. We're trying to encourage Intel to do a better job...

I have recently uninstalled McAfee Virus Scan which was a part of the OEM as the trial period ended. And I must say that it is much, MUCH better right now although still it could be better. Certainly, this is not a proper solution - it is rather a temporary one but at least it's effective.
