Why dosen't my acer aspire 5732z play cds?  It just spins and makes popping noises.  It stopped working a few months after purchase, early 2010.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the cd/dvd drivers.  Nothing seems to work.  Also- i have w7 home edition, in case that is relevant.

Most probably this could be a hardware issue.

Please check in My computer to see whether the CD/DVD drive is listed there.

If so, insert a DVD and check how long it will take to detect the CD/DVD.

I suggest you to try with different CD/DVD also.
