What type and how much RAM can I use to upgrade an Aspire 5740?

I have an Aspire 5740 laptop that is 3 years old, and I'd like to upgrade the RAM. My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit. I currently have 4GB RAM installed, and I read online that the max I can have is 16GB for my OS at 64 bit. However, I'm unsure of the hardware specifications that may limit the maximum RAM, or what type to buy. I've looked around NewEgg.com but there are so many to choose from. Advice?
