Unable to connect AO753 using HDMI

I am having problems with the HDMI output from my Aspire netbook AO753. Here's the background. I can successfully connect my netbook to my TV using an HDMI cable. I can connect other devices (e.g. tablet) to my HP 22Xi monitor using an HDMI cable. So I know that the HDMI connector works on my netbook and on my monitor.

However, if I attempt to connect my netbook to my monitor using an HDMI cable, no signal is detected by the monitor. In addition, the netbook does not recognise the external display device when connected by HDMI to the monitor (unable to toggle between displays). The VGA connector works fine but I need to be able to use HDMI.
