Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

I haven't posted in a while becasue I sent back my 2nd defective R7 a month ago for a refund due to the same wifi issues that everone is having, refusing to ship it to TX (I'm in CA) for repairs) after talking repeatedly with some guys in India.  After looking for something else for weeks, I decided to give it one more try as I just fell in love with the R7 design and couldn't find anything remotely comparable.  Low and behold the 3rd R7 gets delivered to my door.  I open it up expecting to go through wifi connectivity hell and guess what?  Same issue when not within 10 feet of my router - better than before but just not acceptable still.  Shocking right?  And to top it off the "C" key is really stiff and not responsive when typing.  I am almost ready to take the computer and light a bonfire for it when I decide to pop the "C" key off and investigate.  There was a random tiny screw jammed under the key keeping it from pushing all the way down!  I surgically removed it with tweezers, snapped the key back on and all was well again.  Now for the WiFi bs...So at this point I decided to try everything I could think of.  I've invested too much time with these machines to just give up...again.  I bought a new router to replace our 12 year old router that needed to go anyway.  No change, but my other devices are faster.  We bought an external USB wifi adapter - no different.  (I was hopeful on this one since others have posted that it worked for them.) We bought a wifi range extender which is located on the opposite end of the house from the router (where I do most of my work).  This proved somewhat promising as now I was able to get some decent connectivity but not totally consistent.  Lastly, I disabled the power saving mode in Power Management settings (WiFi Status - Properties - Configure - Power Management).  This made it more consistent.  Now I'm getting good results and am enjoying this machine very much!  If connectivity suddenly gets weak to non-existent, it is either due to a Time Warner outage (which is typical for them and has happened twice just within the last week) or I just have to reset the range extender (which I haven't had to do but once other than when I was experimenting with it for connectivity).  The only frustrating part is the disabling of the power saving mode doesn't stay disabled upon rebooting the computer, although there have been times when it was enabled and the wifi was working great, others when it was slower so I had to disable it.  So I have to check it once in a while when I'm seeing slower connections.  I don't know if this will help anyone, but I finally feel good about this computer and just hope this can help someone else (or at least make you laugh at the ridiculous steps we are all taking to make this **bleep** thing work:smileyhappy:.  I still am not happy with Acer support and there complete ignorance and blatant ignoring of this problem which seems to be more widespread than not.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

Most users probably don´t use bluetooth, so perhaps it has gone unnoticed, but isn´t the bluetooth connection just as bad?

The wireless mouse that came with this R7 didn´t connect.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

Yes I noticed too, but wasn't sure if it was my bluetooth sound speakers or the notebook. Wlan and bluetooth both are from Broadcom and usually have the same driver, right?

Is actually someone from acer active here in the official acer support forum? This thread now has looots of views and replies... Simply say "we know there is a problem and we will try to find a solution" and I will understand it. Don't make me go back to Samsung.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

[ Editado ]

Just got a reply from acer support: they just said sorry for not supporting windows 7 with drivers, and the question about wifi was just ignored.

The Network Meter gadget on this one shows 60% strength "Good" and Internet Access but with data transfer almost at zero though an internet speed test doesn´t show anything. Only on 90% excellent right next to router speed is good. Doesn´t that sound like internal interference rather than weak link? So it´s just a problem where the antenna is placed.

Using the USB ports sort of ruin what they were there for (mouse and fast usb3 drives).

How about this:

This is of course impossible, since it would mean that acer support had to produce a wifi antenna that would fit to the acer converter port.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

Hi all - the solution posted a few weeks ago below worked for me.  It was pretty simple to correct.  My speed was <5 MBPS about 15 feet away from my router and now it's back up into the 20-25 MBPS range which is normal.   Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

Same problem: Poor or none WiFi connection. Hardware is Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 adapter.Driver: 11/03/2013; Version 10.0.0.234

Switched off Power savings.

(Open Network connections, Wi-Fi properties, Configure Qualcomm Atheros properties and selected Power management. Unmarked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" So the adapter is always on.)

Now my WiFi connection is good.

Closed the R7  (hibernate) , opened it again and switched ON.

WiFi connection was not automatically recoverd. Manually connected and have a good connection now.

According to me it is a software issue.

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

Wanted a simple laptop since left mine in europe , so went to bestbuy to buy one.  Started out looking at the 500 range laptops and saw the r7 and decided to step it up!  What a mistake!! This day and age how can a company put a laptop out that cantget signel from 10 feet way from the router!!  # other laptops have no problems all around my house except ,the latest and greatest cant be more than 10ft away or it shuts off!!! So i call the soution center and like usual they put the blameon everyone else!!  They had me on the line for 40 min trying this and that but still nothing fixed the probelm.  So i said screw this im returning it!! I go back to best buy to exchnge it there out!!! So went to another best buy which had four of them available.  The girl there said open the new one and test it out here beforeyou leave soi did.  The computer worked fine! i said great.  I got home and the same problem happend!! So this is the second one with the same wifi issue!!! I even had time warner come out and upgrade the boxand router to there latest and 50mg download and still nothing!!!  I give up im returning this one and getting a different laptop even though i really liked this one.  And after reading this i guess the spacebar doesntwork to well eithier!, lol

Re: Poor Wifi on new Aspire R7

Thanks all for your feedback.   The following is my experience with the WiFi issues on my Aspire R7:

I have issues at home on my “airport extreme” and at our business office?  Only works if I’m within 10ft of the router.  I tested the issue at several different locations and some worked some didn’t.  However, things worked great on the road at the United Club in the airport (3 different Cities). I also tried a D-link DWA-140 and a Belkin N300 USB WiFi adapter. Both had the same issue and only worked within 10ft.

The fact that it works in some locations and on some routers and that a Wi-Fi dongle doesn’t work either, makes me believe that this is a software issue that Acer needs to resolve. I hope that they post something soon.  Otherwise I will return this my laptop to Best Buy (I have 60 days to return it).. It really is too bad, because I really like this laptop
