New Member - I need help with Windows 8.1 installation 0xc1900101-0x20017

Hi 1 and all,

I have an Acer TravelMate 5730 which originaly had Vista installed, this was then upgraded to Windows 7. I have since upgraded to Windows 8 Pro with Media Centre and am now attempting (9 attempts so far) to instal Windows 8.1 however; on reboot I'm told it cannot update and is rolling back to Windows 8 this is then followed by: 0xc1900101-0x20017.

I have been on the Microsoft community site to attempt to find a solution and have done everything recommended e.g. ensuring all drivers and Windows 8 updated, checking for corruption of system files, uninstalling 3rd part software, clean booting etc etc. Windows 8.1 still will not install. I have even rebuilt my laptop with just Windows 8 Pro on it and gone through all the previously outlined checks - still will not install.

The only thing I have noticed is that my Phoenix BIOS is at Version 1.32. According to the ACER support site I understand that version 1.34 is required for Windows 7. Though I am running Windows 8 Pro without any problems would updating my BIOS to Version 1.34 be of help with this problem - if so how do I go about it?

Regards

Malcolm, I would advise you to thank MS for saving you from a disaster. Windows 8.1 is a complete operating system that will erase your drivers if you install it. You might get by with the generic drivers it includes, and you might not. Finding working drivers for a Vista machine with 8.1 as an operating system could be quite a challenge.

Certain CPUs that run well with Windows 8 are not compatible with 8.1. There might be other hardware in your machine that is not compatible with 8.1, and MS designed 8.1 to reject machines that are that incompatible. I advise you to consider yourself as fortunate in having a close call and getting away with it, and stay with your current operating system.

Hope this helps.
