WE have an hp1012 laserjet. While attempting to install the printer on our new Aspire-Win7- there is no option for the DOT4_0001 port and I have not been successful while attempting to install a program.
Any suggestions? Thanks Bruce

This printer has USB port. You may connect the printer to the USB port on the laptop.
Before you conenct the printer, make sure you have installed the printer driver on the laptop.

yes it does have a USB port, however, hp no longer supports the hp 1012 on win 7.
So it is necessary to put in the driver for the hp 3055- I did that a couple months ago on my upgraded computer.
This computer does not have a listing for the DOT 4. That is what I need

As you may well know, DOT4_0001 is a virtual port that points to a physical USB port.
While this port does not exist on Win7, it does have a virtual port available - USB001
Try adding a new printer, 'use an existing port' and select USB001
There's no guarantee of success as you say Win7 drivers for your printer are not available of course - but worth a try.

BCC, anybody who can keep a budget 2004 printer still oerating has got to be good. Here's a website with drivers for your printer http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/

I have just seen two posts on the HP Support Forum that claim Vista drivers (32 and 64bit) for the HP Laserjet 1012 work without problems on Win7.
I recommend you read pctech33's post for details of his install procedure here:
(Interesting that while HP don't support your printer on Win7, they do on Win8/8.1 - very odd.)

Believe it or not, Alan, I can explain why his printer can run on 8 but not 7.
Years ago, we learned that some VERY early Microsoft programs would run on Windows 98 but not 95. The changing architecture of the hardware, plus the new abilities of the operating system, would sometimes allow an obsolete and unusable program to work on a new computer but not an old one.
