Liquid gallant E350 update fails

Managed to get a bit further.

After only downloading the update, without installing ('Install Later'), I browsed the sdcard, and found a folder named fota_dn with a file in it the size of the update (9.83MB), filename I didn't capture, it was very long, random mix of characters it seemed.

I created a folder acer_ug on the sdcard and to be sure also on the phone storage.

I copied the file from the fota_dn folder to both of these acer_ug folders, renaming it to update.zip

Then I did the install, which seemed to work (I got to see 'Android is upgrading').

the acer_ug and fota_dn folder on the sdcard were removed (including content); only the acer_ug folder on the phone storage was still there, albeit without the update.zip file.

However, the 'about phone' still tells me I'm on Android 4.04

Checking for updates gives 'your device is up to date'
