Laptop shuts down when AC plugged in

Hi all,

When I'm using my laptop and the battery runs low, I plug in the AC adaptor.

All this does is shuts the laptop down immediately and I can't restart it unless I unplug the AC adaptor.

I thought at first it was the battery, so bought a new battery, no joy, so then I thought it was the adaptor, so I bought a new adaptor, but still no joy.

The laptop has worked beautifully for the last two and a half years, and still does when it's running.

Can anyone shed some light on what I should do next please??

Laptop shuts down when the wall power switch is turned off despite battery being charged.

I have a Acer Aspire 5573 laptop which has been working immaculately since the last many years, just recently, i encountered a problem where it would'nt power on and was told that the power i.c. was damaged and it needed to be replaced. The replacement has been completed and the laptop does power on. However, subsequenly, I have observed that when i used the laptop on AC (direct power) mode with the battery inserted, and turned off the wall power switch accidentally, the laptop shut down completely, despite the batter being nearly 45% charged.

The said battery is relatively new and when used on battery power, the laptop gives me anywhere from 3 - 3:30 hours of battery back up, without any difficulty.

Could someone kindly shed some light on this, in terms of whether the technician could have caused any unnecessary damage while replacing the power i.c. and if there is any way one can find any evidence of tampering with the motherboard.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Alavets, can you explain how you get it to run when it does work? That might help us figure out the cause.

Hope this helps.

Re: Laptop shuts down when the wall power switch is turned off despite battery being charged.

Hi Vince,

The only way to get the laptop to work is to run it on battery, which means that I need to turn it off, then plug the power in, let the battery recharge, disconnect the power, and then re start.

I hope this helps, sorry about the delay, I was overseas

Alavet, I am amazed that this low-cost rig lasted you for six and a half years. You can take it to a reputable computer shop, but since a new laptop can be bought for about $250 US, I would not be willing to spend a lot of money on it.

Hope this helps.
