I can't use the mousepad on my laptop.

I am unable o use the mouse pad no my Aspire E1 Laptop.  The mouse icon does not show up at all.  I can right click though.  It works through the number pad but it is not set up for that.  I have plugged in an external mouse and that works perfectly.  It has been ok up until today.  Only bought laptop last week.  Any help would be appreciated.
