The problem is not a PXE boot error, it's "No bootabe device -- insert boot disk and press any key."

Thank you for the suggestion == unfortunately Alt/F10 didn't break the fault process so I couldn't go that route.  Looks like a trip to the Geek Squad for me, I have little tech ability, no original disks and no external (or internal) CD reader anhyow. But thanks for the help!

It seems to be an issue with the HDD. Login to BIOS and check if the HDD model is listed under boot device. Restart the computer on Acer logo keep on tapping F2 to login to BIOS. Then check under boot menu for the HDD model. If the HDD is not listed if possible reseat the HDD some times that will solve the issue if not replace the HDD.

OK. there's nothing listed after the "USB HDD: " line.   The Boot menu looks like this:

    Boot priority order:

    1. IDE0:

    2. IDE1:

    3. USB FDD:

    4. USB HDD:

    5. USB CDROM:

    6. Network Boot: Atheros Boot Agent

    is this the correct order?

how difficult is it to reseat the HDD? is that something a simply user can accomplish?

    thank you!

Is there any model number listed either near IDE 0 or IDE 1? If not the HDD is not detected.

If you can provide me the model number of your Acer laptop I can provide you some steps to reseat the HDD.

In most laptops HDD are End User Replaceable Part.

    Odd, I thought I had replied ... it's an Acer NAV 50.

    Thanks!

Remove the three (3) screws from the HDD Cover

Lift the HDD cover up to remove

Slide the HDD to the right to disconnect the HDD from the interface connector.

Lift the hard disk drive module out of the bay.

ok, and then wha do I do once it's out?

Then you can remove the HDD and reinsert it back make sure the battery and adapter is removed when you does this. Some time the computer will boot fine, if its still the same remove the HDD from HDD cradle and you can place the new HDD in that place.

If you search online you will find the service guide for your laptop. It will be more easy for you if you have the service guide with you.

Have you checked in BIOS if the HDD is listed under boot menu?

I returned the HDD when it didn't do the job but I can go back again, what does it mean it it does / does not appear on the menu?

If you have the old HDD with you. Install it in the laptop and login to BIOS and check in boot menu if there is any HDD model listed near HDD 0 or HDD 1

    Example HTS545032B9A300

If it is listed then it might be an issue with the boot sector of the HDD.

    Check and let me know

HDD 1 is the only HDD listed on the boot priority order and there's nothing after the : (just USB HDD: ). I think it was the same when I tried the new HDD but I'm not 100% certain

This is a job for someone who really understand computers and laptops. The machine is not recognising the hard drive as a bootable device. Why that is happening could be a lot of things but data recovery may require someone who can mount the hard disk as a slave to another computer.
