How To Turn Notebook Display Off When I Close The Lid

Is there a way to enable turning the display off when I close the lid of my V5-131-2629 notebook? When I click on the setting in Control Panel-Power Management, all I see is Do Nothing, Sleep, Hibernate or Power Off. The notebook has factory installed Windows 7 64 bit with all current Windows updates installed. I have a notebook from another manufaturer also with Windows 7 32 bit and Linux that has the option to turn the display off. I do not see anything about this listed in the Knowledge Base and I do not find any drivers listed for download on the Support website for this notebook. If I go into settings for the power profiles, I can set the display to turn off after a set number of minutes or hours, but there is no way to turn the display off when I close the lid. I currently have it set to dim the display after 10 minutes and turn it off after 30 minutes of no activity, but I need the option to turn the display off and leave the notebook running when I close the lid. I want the display to stay on when I leave the lid open.

If there is not a way to do this with the installed software, does anyone know of a third-party utility that will provide this option?

Thank you!

Dave

Re: How To Turn Notebook Display Off When I Close The Lid

Dave, this is a new one. Leaving the display on with the cover closed will drain your battery and produce excess heat. If you simply use Sleep mode, your laptop will quickly revive and will be where you left it. And just as coming out of Sleep takes a few seconds, restarting the monitor when you open the lid will take a few seconds.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I realize leaving the display on when the lid is closed with drain the battery unnecessarily. That is why I want the option to turn the display off when I close the lid. I leave this notebook runnig for long periods of time logging two-way radio activity while I am not watching it, sometimes overnight, or while I am away. I do not want the notebook to go into Sleep or Hibernate when this program is running. Letting it go into Sleep or Hibernate mode defeats the purpose of the program I am running. Most other notebooks and laptops I have seen provides the option to have the display turn off when closing the lid. I need that option on this notebook.

Re: How To Turn Notebook Display Off When I Close The Lid

So, you wish to close the lid while continuing to run an application (Do nothing) and turn off the backlight?

I thought the backlight went off whenever the lid is closed (I've not tried it set to do nothing). Have you tried turning it off with <FN> + <F6>?

Re: How To Turn Notebook Display Off When I Close The Lid

Yes, <Fn>+<F6> works. I have it set to Do Nothing when I close the lid, and that is exactly what it does - nothing. My last notebook, another brand, had the option to Turn Display Off under the Close Lid setting in Control Panel. It was Windows 7 32 bit. When I did not find that setting, the first thing I did was look for a driver update, but there are none for this model. Is this something that Acer could address in a driver update?
