Hello all,

Quick summary on the bottom.

Detailed problem

I have tried scouting through all the posts and the web to try and factory reset my Acer Aspire S3-951-6646 (Windows 7 x64) with the eRecovery Media Cd's. I am hoping that maybe someone has had my problem, or a tech will be able to help. This laptop was a hand-me-down (the previous user dislike the mouse/click combo "screen"), barely used. Since I received it, it is strictly used for work, so no junkware or virus-laden sites are visited. Primarily excel and email are its purpose.

Please bare with me. I am going to try and give the event leading up to the current situation and important details in hopes that it will help make finding a solution easier

After 9 months of problem free work, there was an update from both Acer and Windows 7 (the one that happens when I try to shut down and it tells me "Installing update, do not unplug") about 2 months ago. SInce then, I was getting frequent BSOD's: particularly something very close to the wording BAD_MEMORY, BAD_POOL_HEADER. It would most often happen when I was working on an excel sheet or opening Microsoft Word/Excel/Firefox (oddly enough)

I figured it was time to factory default it. I backed up my Microsoft Office files but did not create a restore point (my fault, but perhaps useless in the end).

I first followed the instructions to use the alt+F10 method to restore to Factory settings, but it would fail ~34% and then say "WIMApplyImage fail error 0x570 (1392)"

After that, I search the net and found that a problem may be in the partitions. Under another online threads advice I deleted all partitions (except for one partition that the system wouldn't delete, I forget which and I can't get to the window to see it anymore) and tried running the eRecovery from the alt+F10 method again.

It had the same error, but now I can't go past the initial Acer "press F2 for setup" screen. Instead I get BOOTMGR is missing. Please press Ctrl+Alt+Del every time.

I can no longer access the Alt+F10 eRecovery Manager either. So I ordered the eRecovery Media CD's from Acer to try and solve the problem.

Got it in the mail yesterday 9/26/13, and have been trying all manners of methods to make this work. I followed the provided instructions: System Disk and Choose my language.

After that I have two out of 3 choices and the errors that occur below:

1. Restore Operating System to Factory Defaults

  • Warning about erasing all existing data on C:
  • I click "Next"
  • Shows the Hard Drive Name: Hitachi HTS543232A7A384 ATA Device, Partition Label: Acer, Partition Size: 298.0GB
  • Click "Next"
  • Insert Recovey Disc 1 into optical drive via USB connection, click "OK"
  • Warning about the action will erase all existing data on Partition label: ACER, click "OK"
  • ~11 seconds later "FAIL CreateiSSDPT disk 0"
  • Cannot find anything on the web about FAIL CreateiSSDPT disk 0

2. Restore Operating System and Retain User Data

  • Grayed out and cannot choose

3. Completely Restore Computer to Factory Defaults  ***This is what I want***

  • "Please remove all files from your hard disk before starting. This function will not work if there are any files on the hard disk"
  • Clicking "OK" returns me to the 3 choices, nothing else

Tl;dr Problem:

Tried to Factory Reset Acer Aspire S3-951-6646 due to lots of BSOD from ACER and/or Windows 7 Updates during shutdown. I am stuck with a (currently priced) $800 brick that only repeats the problems mentioned above. Warranty expired. Ordered eRecovery Media CD's via Acer, computer still won't Factory reset. Internet does not have an answer to my error/fail messages. Please help.

First, I would like to say, "Thank you" for that very well thought out and complete post of your issue and what you have tried.  That makes it a great deal easier to attempt to help.

Now, that being said ... this is an issue that may be difficult for me to assist with through the Community.

The message that is coming up for Option 1 is an SSD partition error.

I'm going to suggest that you attempt to remove every partition from the drive, then run recovery from the optical media and attempt to use Option 3 again.

Please let me know how that goes.

    Hello Tommy,

Thank you very much for the response. I look forward to our combined efforts solving this problem.I would also like to add that my skills with computers is somewhat amateur-ish (to set up the proper level of tech lingo we may exchange further on).

I have finally found the time to test out your suggestion (underneath each number is my action):

    1) Remove all partitions

I used a widely recommended free bootable application, Hiren's Bootable CD. Using the Parted Magic app (Linux based Partition Magic). Once the GUI loaded, I used the Partition Editor to delete all partitions. This gathered all ~300GB of memory to one giant unallocated "Partition". I also checked the ssd and hdd basic health with the Disk Health, both passed.

I restart the laptop into the System Disk.

    Choose system Language English.

    2) Use the Recovery CD (System Disk)

    3) Choose Option 3

I was finally able to choose option 3 (Completely Restore Computer to Factory Defaults)

I choose 100% OS partition size

Disk Partition status: OS (CSmiley Happy 278GB (NTSF)

Insert Recovery Disk 1 in to USB Optical Drive

"OK" erasing all existing data on Partition label: OS

~10 seconds later "FAIL create partition table for disk 1"

I checked the web and Acer forums before potentially bothering you with this. I have also re-tried all steps twice to no avail (second time, there were no partitions to remove as they have collectively become one giant unallocated partition). This DID NOT create any partitions.

I should also mention that after deleting all partitions on the laptop, I not longer get "BOOTMGR is missing. Press ctrl+alt+del" after the ACER logo screen. The message has been replaced with "No bootable device == insert boot disk and press any key (the eRecovery System Disk CD and Hiren's Boot Cd remain bootable)

In an attempt to get some temporary use out of the laptop, I tried just restoring the OS (Option 1: Restore OS to Factory Defaults)

This choice leads me to the previously mentioned "FAIL CreateiSSDPT disk 0" again.

I found out that doing this DOES create a partition (verified with the Hiren's Disk Partition Editor):

    Partition: /dev/sda1

    File System: ntfs

    Mount Point: /media/sda1

    Label: ACER

    Size: 298.09GiB

    Used: 3.00 GiB

    Unused: 295.09 GiB

    &

    Partition: unallocated

    File System: unallocated

    Mount Point:

    Label:

    Size: 1.34 MiB

    Used: ---

    Unused: ---

Later in the day I'll run a HDAT2 test to see if there are any bad sectors in the HDD/SDD, though it will be the first time I have run the program on a drive I have attempted to wipe/remove all partitions on.

Please let me know what I should try next.

Unfortunately, getting SSD and HDD errors when trying to create the partitions means that we're really not going to get very far with continuing to attempt to reload the system.

I'm going to suggest that you contact your local Acer service center for some assistance with the drive(s).

    Understood. Sad as it is.

Thank you for all the effort and help up until now.
Kudos to you, and deservedly so.

I have checked the support for Guam's location: http://acer.com/worldwide/support/country/Guam.htm

Is there someone I can reach in particular to inquire about how to possibly sending in the laptop for repair, estimated price, etc. via email correspondence?

They only list a long distance phone number for contact, and that's going to be a pretty hefty price for just an inquiry (let alone the huge time difference [we are GMT +10]).

    Found the repair request services.
