Acer Aspire One 725-0687 - When laptop is unplugged (using battery only) the screen brightness is great, but when I plug it in the screen goes so dim I can barely see anything. Is there a control or setting that can be adjusted? I can't find anything on Windows 8. Arrrrgghh!

Click on your battery whilst it's charging and select "Adjust screen brightness". Once you have the window open, select "Change plan settings" on the approriate power plan (balance/power saver). Once you do that, there will be a "On battery" and a "Plugged in" collum. Adjust the "Dim siplay" and the "Plan brightness" to your preferance.
Let me know how you get on and if you have any problems following these instructions, feel free to ask anything else.

I had a similar constant problem where the screen brightness would keep reverting to the lowest position...I even wiped the hard drive and re-installed everything and still the problem kept on...it was very frustrating and then one day it sorted itself out...no update of drivers or anything...not much help to you I know but there seems to be this issue at times...have you made sure your drivers are up to date ?

I have the sasme problem, just started recently. I have adjusted the power options to brighter, but on the window where you select the options there also is a slider bar for brightness, which I also put to brighter. It always slides to dim. does not matter if the unit is plugged in or on battery. some times even in the edit plan the brightness settings change by themselves, even when they are saved for a particular setting.
