Aspire 5741 BIOS update failure

I have just replaced a failed hard drive into a Acer Aspire 5741 V1.10 and made a clean install of Win7 64.  In an effort to get the FN keys working I attempted a BIOS update using the windows BIOS installer for this model downloaded from Acer.  The install failed with the error “IHISI: flash write error in SMI!”  Now it won’t boot at all.  Is there a recovery procedure for this?

I have this issue also.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Booting to black screen with fan and power both working.

If you're up for the challenge you can download the BIOS image from the acer website and put it on a usb key. You'll have to extract the files from the installer to do this. Now Retart the computer and hold FN + ESC. Hold for 10 seconds and then release. Now let the device sit for say 10 minutes. If done right it will perform an emergency recovery on the bios using the image from the root of the usb.
