For weeks, my R7 screen has been "stuck" in "normal" orientation and does not rotate when used in tablet mode or kiosk mode. I remember seeing an alert message appearing only once, I don't recall the exact wording, but something like "the Ezel sensor has crashed." I have restarted multiple times with no change. Any ideas?

There are 2 applications that control autorotate. The Acer Ezel Sensor application and a Microsoft (embedded) application.
If there is a problem with the Acer Ezel Sensor application, it can be removed and the Microsoft app will take over.
To reinstall the Acer Ezel Sensor application, you can locate the application on "virtual" apps/driver disk (via eRecovery) as part of the Sensor and KB Application (settings).

I have the same problem. I don't understand what you mean by "virtual" apps/driver disk. What is eRecovery? Where is it? Where is Sensor and KB Application
