Acer Aspire; 'battery not detected'

I have an Acer Aspire 5738G, running Windows 7 Home Premium (32bit). Recently, the original battery lost it's ability to hold charge, so I bought what I thought was a compatible replacement battery.

Upon installing the battery, i'm told by the system indicator that there is 'no battery detected'. The new battery does indeed charge up and power the computer (it works fine when the power adaptor is disconnected).

Is there a way to remedy this? Or is the battery simply not compatible with the hardware or system in some fundamental way?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Where did you order the battery from? What is the part number of the battery you are using?
