the page is on a loop. No boot disk. I did no bother to make one.

There is a good chance that the issue is with the HDD. You may need to look into a replacement HDD and getting the Recovery disk for the unit.

If the comptuer is out of warranty, you can actually put in any hard drive that meets the RPMs of the hard drive. Say if you have a 250GB 5400RPM Sata2 hard drive in your comptuer, you can do a google search for it and purchace any hard drive that meets those specs. Then, go to http://store.acer.com and click on eRecovery. Put in your SNID or Serial number in and it should give you how to purchace your recovery disks. There is also a phone number there if you need to talk to a live person.
