I have had this laptop for almost a year, and the microphone started giving me trouble about 5 months back. I never really bothered with it, but it's becoming a problem. The computer will not detect even the default microphone. I've rebooted it many, many times, to no avail. Any microphones I try to plug it aren't detected, and I've tested them on other computers and they work just fine there.  Any suggestions before I try calling support?

Well you may want to take a look into the settings (control panel) and take a look at the mic location and make sure that you don't have another device active that is blocking the mics you’re plugging in. If that does not work then try and re-install the driver and see if that works.
