What are Chrome OS Channels?
Your Acer Chromebook uses Google Chrome OS which is constantly updated with security patches and new features. These updates go through several channels before being released to users. The process involves different stages of testing and verification to ensure stability and compatibility. The following are the primary channels through which Chrome OS updates flow:
- Stable Channel: This channel is the most reliable and well-tested version of Chrome OS. It is recommended for general users who prioritize stability and security.
- Beta Channel: The Beta channel provides a preview of upcoming features and improvements. It is a slightly less stable version than the Stable channel but still suitable for most users who want to try out new features in advance.
- Dev Channel: The Dev channel is designed for developers and early adopters who want to test the latest features and enhancements. It is less stable than the Beta channel and may have more bugs and issues.
How to switch channels on your Acer Chromebook?
Your Chromebook will ship with the Chrome operating system using the stable channel by default, however, you can change the channel your Chromebook uses if you want to get an early preview to new Chrome OS features. Use the instructions below to change channels on your Acer Chromebook.
Important: Switching channels will power wash your Chromebook and erase all data. You should back up any important data before switching channels.
- Click on the system tray in the lower right corner of the screen where the time is located.
- Click on the Settings ⚙ icon to open the Chrome OS settings.
- Scroll down and click on About Chrome OS.
- In the "About Chrome OS" section, you will see the OS version and build information. Click on Additional details.
- Click on the Change Channel button.
- A pop-up window will appear with the available channels: Stable, Beta, and Developer. Click on the Beta channel.
- Chrome OS will check for updates and start downloading the beta version. Once the download is complete, you will need to restart your Chromebook to complete the switch to the beta channel.
What are the risks of switching out of the stable channel?
When you switch out of Chrome OS stable channel you will be using software that is still in development and has not been fully tested. You should be aware of the following risks and properly evaluate if switching channels is right for you.
