DVD Drive not working - Aspire TC 710

Sometimes it reads the disc; but it usually doesn't. And when it does it is very slow to read - it can be 5 minutes before the explorer window pops up. I have tried the discs in my laptop and they work fine - they open almost immediately so the discs are OK. The drive does power up (disc spins) but usually never opens. I replaced the DVD drive with one from my old desktop (which I know works) and same problem. I checked the SATA cable and it seems to be OK. Any ideas?

Could just be a bad drive. Try refreshing your operating system using the instructions on http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/37335. If that doesn't fix it, you would need to contact service to have the computer repaired or the drive replaced.

I tried the DVD drive (which works fine) from old computer in the Acer. Same problem so I have to assume the drive is not the issue. Could a bad SATA cable caues this problem?

Could be a bad Sata cable, connector, or controller. It is hard to say without examining the sytem.
