    Windows 8 Upgrade Offer page:
    http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/windows-upgrade-offer

The unit is not listed on the upgrade offer page.
There are no drivers listed for Windows 8 on this system.

We are unable to support Windows 8 on this unit.

For anyone interested, I successfully managed to update my Acer Aspire 7720g from Windows Vista to Windows 8.
This is a quick guide describing the steps I took.

    Warnings:
    - I installed W8 x64 - if you are trying to install W8 x86 I would suggest trying the W7 x86 drivers (but I cannot guarantee they work)
    - I used the Vista x64 drivers, since Win 7 drivers were labeled x86. I then discovered that the Win 7 drivers were in fact both x86 / x64, but I did not try them
    - Not all Aspires 7720g are exactly the same, as some components may vary. Please check that the devices you have correspond to the ones I had, and if they differ, use the ones corresponding to your devices

    Instructions:
    1) Windows 8 was able to boot successfully after a clean install. Most drivers just worked, in which case, I simply left them.
    2) I then discovered that some drivers were missing or performed poorly. In such cases, I used the Vista x64 ones from the Acer website:
    3) Audio drivers from MS were installed by Win 8, but they performed poorly. I therefore installed the Realtek ones:
        - Audio_Realtek_6.0.1.5477_Vistax64
They work perfectly, and the subwoofer is back to life again (it was dead with the MS drivers)
    4) Some drivers could not be recognized by Win 8. You see them listed first when you open Device Manager. These were the missing drivers I had to install manually:
        a) CarReader_Ricoh_352.02_Vistax64
        b) CIR_ENE_1.3.1_Vistax64 (IR remote control)
        c) TVtuner_Avermedia_1.1.64.25_Vistax64
    5) the ALPS touchpad driver was found on the ALPS site:
        - TouchPad_ALPS_8.100.2020.112_W8x64U_A
    6) I also installed Launch Manager (always from Acer, but this time I chose the Win 7 program and installed it using Win 7 compatibility mode), because it includes the proper keyboard layout for the Aspire 7720g:
        - LaunchManager_Dritek_3.0.03_W7x86_A
    7) I downloaded and installed the latest Video card drivers (legacy) from the AMD/ATI website

    Further software:
If you want to make Windows 8 look and feel as a better Windows 7, as it should have been, consider installing the following:
    1) Classic Shell from http://www.classicshell.net/ - It is a free app that restores the Start Button / Menu and lets you hide the new Modern UI start screen
    2) VLC Media Player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - It is a free and vastly better alternative to WMP and includes support for DVD playback (which W8 lacks, unless you buy the Media Center edition)

    Further advice:
    1) backup all your data before installing!
    2) consider a clean install rather than an upgrade. You will leave behind possible corrupted files, and you could install an x64 OS instead of an x86 OS, if this is what you originally had. (To download the x64 W8 using MS W8 Upgrade assistant you must do it from an x64 machine though...). BEWARE: a clean install wipes all your files and programs from your HDD. You will have to reinstall all you programs from scratch if you do so (for which you will need to have all your activation codes handy...)!!!
    3) since the 7720g is a dual HDD laptop, it is a good idea to dual boot it for the first few months (i.e. to install W8 on your second drive, leaving the original OS drive intact), to ensure a smooth transition and be sure all needed files have been copied over. To achieve this, the best way is to remove your Vista HDD from you machine and swap the second drive in slot n.1, leaving slot n.2 empty. By doing so, W8 will install the bootloader on the correct drive, and you will not get your Vista bootloader wiped by W8's installer. Then just put the Vista HDD back, this time in slot n.2. To boot Vista, you will simply have to press F12 at startup (if you do not see F12, it means you must enable this feature from the BIOS).
    4) if you decide to go dual boot, you MUST disable the W8 fast startup feature (it is in the power saving options)
    5) if you are downloading W8, do not forget to create a Windows 8 install DVD (it could come handy if someday you need to reinstall your OS)

    Final comments:
    1) Be warned: migrating to a new Win OS is always a tricky business, and NORMALLY SHOULD BE AVOIDED! It always involves many headaches. Even skilled IT people may have problems with it. I was lucky, as it turned out that everything worked fine. Be sure you have a really strong case to upgrade if you want to avoid bitter disappointments. The best rule is: keep the OS that came installed with your PC.
    2) I upgraded when Windows 8 Pro with Media Center cost 39.99 $. Now that same combination costs a whopping 209.98 $! Are you really sure you want to pay this price, especially if you consider all the hassles you will have to go through? Despite the bad name, Vista is ok (I have it on another PC and it works fine).
Alternatively, consider buying a new PC alltogether. Assuming that this new PC comes with Windows 8 (not Pro) installed (Windows 8 Pro with Media Center upgrade pack from Windows 8 costs 99.99 $), avoiding upgrading your 7720g brings at least a 129.99 $ saving, since you would not need to upgrade it to Windows 8.

Hope this helps anyone trying to install Windows 8 on an Acer Aspire 7720g!

Aceresia, congratulations on a successful OS upgrade!

I advise everybody  not to do what you did, but you still got it to work.
