Acer Chromebooks include a dictation accessibility feature that allows dictate text into electronic documents. Your Chromebook will use the built-in microphone to convert your spoken words into text and place the text into any application you have open. This feature can be useful if you are unable to type, or find typing to be slow or difficult. You can use the instructions below to turn on and manage your dictation settings.
How to Turn On Dictation (Speak to type) on Chromebook
- Click on the Time in the lower right corner and select Settings ⚙, or use Alt +Shift + S to quickly open Settings ⚙.
- Scroll to the bottom of the list and select Advanced.
- Scroll down to the Accessibility section and select Manage Accessibility Features.
- Go to Keyboard and Text Input, and turn on Enable Dictation (speak to type). A microphone icon 🎙 should now appear next to the time to allow you to use.
How to Turn Off Dictation (Speak to type) on Chromebook
- Click on the Time in the lower right corner and select Settings ⚙, or use Alt +Shift + S to quickly open Settings ⚙.
- Scroll to the bottom of the list and select Advanced.
- Scroll down to the Accessibility section and select Manage Accessibility Features.
- Go to Keyboard and Text Input, and turn off Enable Dictation (speak to type).
How to Use Dictation (Speak to type) on Chromebook
- Place the cursor where you want the text to appear.
- In the system tray in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, select Speak🎙. You can also press Search 🔎 + D or press Launcher ⦿ + D 🔎 shortcuts to open dictation.
- Say the words you want to appear and your Chromebook will input the text.
