How can I get into the BIOS or UEFI setup on my computer?
What is BIOS?
The term BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. The BIOS is software program or firmware that provides the computer with the instructions that it needs to initialize your computer when it is first powered on. You may need to enter the BIOS screen to modify the boot order, enable or disable hardware components, or change the system time and date. You can enter the BIOS using one of the methods below.
Method 1: How to Enter the BIOS using hotkeys
Notebooks
- Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, or until your system shuts completely down.
- Power on the system. As soon as the first logo screen appears, immediately press F2 for notebooks or Delete for desktops to enter the BIOS.
- Press F9 and then Enter to load the default configuration.
- Press F10 and then Enter to save and exit.
Desktops
- Completely power off your computer by pressing and holding the Power key until the computer completely shuts off, which is generally about five seconds.
- Press the Power key to power on the system.
- As soon as the first logo screen appears, immediately press the Del key to enter the BIOS.
Method 2: How to Enter the BIOS from Windows Start Menu
- Click the Start menu and select Settings.
- Click Update & security.
- Click Update and recovery.
- Select Recovery from the left column, then click Restart now.
- Once the boot menu appears, select Troubleshoot.
- In the Troubleshoot menu, select Advanced options.
- In the Advanced options menu, click UEFI Firmware Settings.
- Click Restart. The system will restart and enter UEFI (BIOS).
How to reset the BIOS to factory default settings
- Enter the BIOS using one of the methods above.
- Press the F9 key to reset BIOS defaults.
- Press the F10 key to save your changes and exit.
