Hi,

My Aspire 5 (A515-51G) is not working as it says "No Bootable Device Found". I have it checked at a computer repair center.

Firstly, they reinstalled the windows + Bios to make sure it was not software issue, and the laptop worked for about 2 days then it shut down suddenly. That same problem came back the next time I turned it on. Brought it back to the shop, this time I've got the hard drive replaced. Same thing happened as it worked for 2-3 days then shut down unexpectedly while was in use, it was "No bootable device found" again.

I have no ideas how to get it fixed, and the shop refused to help me further as they said they could not get it done and it seems not fixable :((((
I do not have money to buy a new laptop in this hard time, and would do everything to save this laptop to carry on with my study.
Please help. I am not a pc guru by the way.

Thank you very much. Deeply appreciate any help.

That's some shop you have there...  :s

Like @Piter said, at first glance it seemed to point to the hard drive or thereabouts, read: the hard drive may not be at fault at all. Did they tell you the reason why they replaced the hard drive? Drives record metadata that can be useful in events like this, for example, plenty of damaged sectors (SMART attributes #5, #196 and #197) signal the hard drive is close to failing.

Reinstalling Windows and firmware ruled out the possibility of the problem being software based, changing the hard drive (for a new one I hope) rules out the possibility of it being the problem as well. I'd look at the way the drive is connected to the motherboard, maybe replacing the cable that connects them both.

There's another SMART attribute that sometimes points to errors between the connection of the drive and the machine, but it's not as descriptive as the ones regarding the damaged sectors. It's #199, and officially it registers CRC errors during transmission.

Quick question, when you get the "No bootable device found" error, if you access the device firmware (F2 I think it's the key to use when powering on the laptop), is the drive detected? Does it show its name or model number in there?

If it doesn't, and the drive was new, the fault could be in the cable or in the motherboard itself.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for your input. And sorry for my late reply.

To aphanic, unfortunately I have already brought my laptop to another shop to get it fixed, hence I am not having it with me now to show you how the BIOS device firmware looks like. But I did check that before when the issue popped up, basically whenever the "No bootable device" happens the hard drive is not recognized (no HDD detected, and I only have 1 HDD hard drive in my laptop).
Another point worth to notice is the problem does not always happen, let's say if today the issue occurs I'll probably not be able to get the laptop started. However, if I leave it alone for a day or 2, there's a chance it can work again. so on a lucky day, I do not have to suffer this pain.
The shop has told me it will consider fixing/replace the motherboard.

    Thanks
  • Depending on the version of the bios, this version of the bios may correct the problem:
