I have an Acer Aspire V5-473P laptop. Originally it was Windows 8 then upgraded to Windows 10. Couple of days ago the hard-drive suddenly died. We put in another hard drive and did a clean installation of windows 10. Now it works fine, except that battery shows as plugged in, not charging. So it can only run with adapter and can't use battery at all. We tried reset the battery (use the reset battery pinhole and disconnect/reconnect battery). Also tried delete the battery's driver. After reboot the driver installed by itself. But neither of these methods work. Any suggestion on how to fix it? Thanks!

Was the battery working good before thr HDD was replaced? Getting a full charge, etc.?

Did the person who installed the HDD forget to plug the battery back in afterward?

The battery was working fine before changing HDD. It did plug in. We tried plugin/unplug several times. The status on the battery shows 'xx% available (plugged in, not charging)'. If we remove power adapter, the laptop shuts down immediately.

    Hi,

Just a short question. When your notebook if off (like completely turned off) does the battery charge? (of course with the charger plugged in) If the answer is not, then I don't think there is anything what we can do to help you. It means that the problem is nowhere is any way the software, but the hardware, so I would suggest to replace the battery, or take it to a service do diagnose the problem. You did the basic trubleshooting (like disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and/or resetting it).  It can be that the battery was shorted, and the chip which reports the battery status (usually on the battery) is malfunctioning, or it could be that the charging cirtuit itself has some problem. To be honest I don't think we can diagnose this issue, just a specialist who can see the notebook can tell you for sure. Since your notebook is working fine from the charger I don't think there could be any issue with the charger.

I believe you're saying that you changed the HDD yourself.

Would the battery get a full charge before the HDD replacement.

If it is plugged in and you did everything correctly, I would say it needs a new battery.

One thing, if, unplugging the battery cable, someone pulled on the wires, it may have pulled a wire back where it's nit getting a good connection.

If I put in the power adapter without turn on laptop, the light indicate battery is on (as orange). Let it remain for several hours and it's still orange. When laptop is on, it says battery is at 92% level.

    Hi,

I assume that the orange light means the battery is charging (I have no idea).Does the percentage change in windows after keeping it plugged in for charging when the computer it's off? And if you remove the charger even after "charging" does your computer stay on or it's shutting off imediately as you described previously?

Also could you tell me what is hw monitor telling you about the battery?

    http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Like designed capacity, actual capacity and so on.

I download HWMonitor. Following are the numbers shown for battery: Current Voltage 16.658V; Designed Capacity 53352 mWh; Full Charge Capacity 54112 mWh; Current Capacity 49446 mWh; Charge Level 91%.

If I unplug power adapter, the laptop shuts down immediately.

BTW, I search on internet. Some places say it may need to refresh or upgrade BIOS. But refreshing BIOS seems to be dangerous. Is it something I should try?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Well obviously there is something really wrong with the battery readings. I mean you have the full charge capacity bigger than the designed capacity. You have this situation if the computer is new (like one or two days old) and it dissappears imediately after first few days of use. The full charge capacity of a battery will be always lower than the designed capacity and will get even lower with the time. This difference is the wear level of the battery. I don't think that even reseting or updating the BIOS can fix the issue. There is obviously something wrong with the battery or in worst case with the charging circuit.

On some Acer laptops there is a micro switch under the ram access cover that needs to be pressed for the battery to work. The battery will not charge or deliver power and the computer will say “plugged in not charging” if this switch is not pressed properly. The switch is supposed to be pressed in by the ram access cover. I just discovered this today after hours of troubleshooting a Acer aspire 5 after the battery stopped working while I was working on it. Turns out the problem was simply that I didn’t have the ram cover installed.

I have the same problem as all of you. My 5 yr old Acer V5 473P laptop's battery got all swollen and broke through the bottom casing.
Took it to a specialist and he suggested I replace the battery.
Unfortunately the new battery isn't recognized by the laptop, the orange light is continually blinking(even when I pull the power cord which turns off the laptop immediately..same issues as you all have.
A few members of this community tried to assist and even suggested updating the BIOS with the "Fix system sometime shutdown by PECI read fail in Win PE" download option on Acers Drivers page.
After researching this further, it seems like this fixes when the laptop turns off randomly..which is not my issue so I'm not going to update the BIOS.

I am intrigued by AnPerson's recent post that mentions "On some Acer laptops there is a micro switch under the ram access cover that needs to be pressed for the battery to work."

Off to YouTube & Google Search I go to find out where this cover might be located on my laptop and then pressing it in.

Open to any guidance on this fix.....
