Why doesn't my headphone jack work on my new Acer Aspire V laptop? How do I fix it?

The speakers work but my computer doesn't detect my headphones, the sound just comes out of the speakers.

    connect your headphones

right click on the speaker icon near clock and date (bottom right of your screen)

    choose playback devices

check if headphones appear as device

    if not

right click on a blank space in this windows and tick both show disable devices/show disconnected devices

    if headphones appears

enabled or reconnect device and set as default

How do I right click by the way? I've been using the touch screen for that.

I checked both options and still no headphones, and yes they're plugged in.

    Windows logo key + X
    click on Device manager

if Yellow exclamation mark is present
    double click on it
    choose "Details" tab
    from dropdown menu, select HardwareIDs
click on the first value and copy/paste it here

    or

    on Device manager

expand "sound, video and game controllers" tree

    what kind of devices appear?

Hey Ninjaman, did you ever get anywhere with this? I have the same problem, brand new Aspire E15. I'm wondering about exactly what type of plug is supposed to go in there.
