The fifth episode of Barrier Breakers features Quiet Sound, a collaborative program aimed at minimizing the impacts of large commercial vessels on Southern Resident orcas.
The iconic Southern Resident killer whales (more commonly known as orcas) of southwestern Canada and the northwestern United States are endangered, with only about 70 left today. Underwater noise from large ship traffic affects the whales' ability to hunt the already scarce salmon. To help them, Quiet Sound uses various technologies to locate whales and notify crews of their proximity, so ships can slow down or change course.
“The tools we use for killer whale protection include technology, research and partnerships.” -Rachel Aronson, Program Director, Quiet Sound.
