Desktop icons disappear on DP mode

I got a new Acer Predator X34P and have connected both DP and HDMI to my monitor and the computer. I haven't got anything except a "No Signal" message when connecting in DP mode until today (I downloaded the latest Geforce update). Now I have a screen with a beautiful wallpaper and a taskbar underneath, but the desktop icons have disappeared completely. The only thing I am able to do is open Cortana. Messing with the graphics there doesn't bring the icons back. I connect to a game in HDMI mode, then switch to DP mode, and the game music is present, it WANTS to display, but just the wallpaper and taskbar are present. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Still just have a wallpaper background and a taskbar...but no icons when I switch to DP mode. This makes it impossible to play games. At least I now have SOMETHING, but it's very frustrating. Can anyone help please?
